NEW figures show Kirklees Council is top of the insulation league.

The Government yesterday released statistics showing that nearly a quarter of homes in the district have been insulated in the last three years the highest proportion in the country.

Some 24.8% of houses in Kirklees have been treated since 2008, followed by the Isle of Anglesey on 22.5% and Carmarthenshire 19.2%.

Kirklees ran the pioneering Warmzone scheme from 2007 to 2010, providing free insulation to 30,000 homes.

Clr Andrew Cooper, who leads the four-strong Greens on Kirklees, welcomed yesterdays news.

The Newsome man said: The key thing about Warm Zone was that it was a compelling offer for people, it took away all the barriers and offered people free insulation.

Clr Cooper believes the rest of the country would benefit from a similar programme.

I wonder why it hasnt been more widely taken up, he said.

Warm Zone takes money away from the energy companies and puts it back in peoples pockets, allowing them to spend more in local shops.
