A READER going by the name of Garfi, from Kirkheaton, had a few questions following last week’s column about solar panels.

The Energy Saving Trust (EST) has provided It’s Our World with some answers.

Garfi asked whether the solar power technology requires maintenance during its working life or if the panels continue to perform at full capacity for at least 15 years.

An EST spokesman said solar panels can reduce in performance by approximately 2% within the first two years.

And within a 25-year period the panels will be working to at least 85% capacity.

Maintenance is generally small – you need to keep the panels relatively clean and make sure trees don’t overshadow them.

Garfi also asked whether the solar panels installed on the Lockwood shop were tested for productivity on “a sweltering Nice in August or a chilly Glaswegian November”.

The Energy Saving Trust confirmed that productivity is calculated for each individual location where solar panels are installed.

All that is required is a roof or wall that faces within 90 degrees of south and isn’t overshadowed by trees or buildings.

If the surface is in shadow for parts of the day it will generate less energy.
