YOUNG people are proving that actions speak louder than words in Lepton.

They are taking part in environmental projects aimed at raising awareness of the environment in which they live.

Around a dozen young people are working with youth workers Darren Weaver and Enrique Salgado, of Kirklees Young People’s Service on land off Highgate Lane.

They have made bird boxes and feeders, taken part in litter picking on the fields and also created a graffiti shelter. They are also hoping to create new footpaths and eventually gain funding for a new children’s play area.

The project is being led in partnership with Sheffield Wildlife Trust and is being funded by the East Peak Innovation Partnership.

Darren said: “Our aim is to raise awareness for young people about the environment and get them to show in a practical way that they care about the community in which they live.”

“The work is being done with DD and K (Denby Dale and Kirkburton) Youth 4em.”

Work is being carried out over the next few weeks.
