PHANTOM tippers have been filling other people’s bins with rubbish in Fixby.

One resident of Broomfield Road believes people have resorted to desperate measures because of cuts in collections.

Householders have left half-empty bins on the street overnight only to find them overflowing by morning on several collection days in the last few weeks.

Tony Capone, 50, said: “For the last few collection days we have put the bin out the night before half empty then we’ve come out in the morning and they have been so full you couldn’t shut the lids.

“It’s happened to other people’s bins as well.

“I think they are resorting to using other people’s bins because there aren’t as many collections now.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if they have worked out when bins are collected in different areas so they can go and fill them up the day before.

“It’s bizarre. If you can be bothered to stick your rubbish in your car and take it and put it in someone else’s bin, why not just take it to the dump?”

Some parts of Huddersfield still have weekly grey bin collections, but Kirklees Council is rolling out fortnightly collections across the district.

Mr Capone, who lives with partner Melissa Walker, said it was not a big problem for them because they rarely filled their bin.

But he added: “If you were a family with four kids, it’s no joke.

“I just don’t want some bespectacled official coming round and punishing me for what someone else is doing.

“If you can’t shut the lid they can refuse to take the bin.

“What also concerns me is that councils have powers to fine you for this sort of thing. It can attract vermin and all sorts.”

A council spokeswoman said: “Householders are not penalised for not shutting bin lids.”
