THE hit-and-run driver who lied about killing Adam O'Toole has been jailed for 18 months.

Brett Kingsley (pictured below), 25, fled after colliding with the 18-year-old Huddersfield New College on New Hey Road in Salendine Nook on March 6, 2007.

He drove back to his home town, Oldham, while Adam died at the scene.

Kingsley then told his family, police and insurers his Rover 200 car had been damaged in an accidental collision in a car park.

He kept up the lie for nearly three years, before a tip-off led police to his door in February of this year.

Kingsley was initially arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, but the Crown Prosecution Service ruled the evidence did not show he had been driving dangerously.

Instead he was charged with, and pleaded guilty to, perverting the course of justice over the false insurance claim.

After Kingsley was jailed at Bradford Crown Court today, Adam's family issued a statement.

It said: ""The driver who killed Adam did not stop, he didn’t even brake and he did absolutely nothing to help Adam as he lay dying.

"By not coming forward, despite countless appeals, he added to our anguish.

"He did not come forward, but he was found out."

Thursday's Examiner will feature a special on the Brett Kingsley case looking at all aspects of the hunt and prosecution as well as an interview with Adam's family.
