LINDLEY Moor eccentric Jake the Rake has crowned himself king of the motorway.

Jake - whose pranks included changing his name to Sir Thomas Henry Erasmus Occupier - has bought a Rover with the number plate M62 REX.

He said: "This makes me king of the motorway, which runs past my back door."

Jake, who is also widely known by the surname Mangel-Wurzel, spotted the car at Brockholes Road with a for sale sign in the window.

He is pleased with his new purchase.

He said: "He's 11 years old but in fine fettle.

"His turbo diesel engine is a bit too big for economy and my insurance has been upped, but there's an essential towbar and the radio's much better than on my old Ford banger."

But for Jake it was the number plate which was the main attraction, proclaiming him - in Latin at least - as king of the M62.

He said: "Previous owners had failed to notice this special feature, so I paid banger price with personalised plate for free."

Jake has driven around town and to see friends in Wombwell near Barnsley in the Rover, which he bought for £300 just before Christmas.

But he is planning a few alterations before the car makes its first regal parade down the M62.

Jake said: "I shall crown him with a roof rack in the spring and a few eccentric decorations which I hope will entertain the humour of Huddsville."

One of Jake's previous cars was fitted with accessories including a bath on the roof!

His incredible Wurzel-Wagen, a 1967 Morris 1000 Traveller, took to the roads around Huddersfield in 1980 with just about everything he owned piled on top.
