Two lorries collided on the M62 sending one crashing into the central reservation.

It is thought an HGV clipped another shortly after Scammonden on the eastbound M62 causing one to jackknife across the motorway.

The fully-loaded wagon travelled into the barrier, smashing up the cab and puncturing its fuel tank.

The driver was not thought to be seriously hurt but the lorry’s fuel leaked onto the road following the incident at 2.20pm today.

A car was also slightly damaged but the driver is also not thought to have been injured.

The motorway was closed briefly following the incident between junction 22, Rishworth Moor and 23 at Huddersfield, to allow emergency services access to the scene.

Firefighters from Elland attended to stop the fuel leak and the police and Highways Agency cleared up the debris.

One lane of the eastbound carriageway remained closed for most of the afternoon causing tailbacks over the Pennines.

Later in the afternoon another collision occurred in the jams that had built up.
