A VILLAGE'S annual jazz festival is promising to be a real crowd-puller.

Almost every pub and club in Marsden will be playing host to events this weekend.

International stars such as singer Stacey Kent and guitarist John Etheridge will perform alongside local favourites and school and youth bands.

One of the main highlights is a New Orleans carnival style parade through the streets, starting from the Mechanics' Hall at noon.

Tickets are selling fast, but many events are free.

Jessica Tuck, one of the festival administrators, said: "Stacey Kent is already sold out, as is our late-night supper event on Saturday.

"It's going to be a great atmosphere thanks to a dedicated team of volunteers.

"A lot of the village will be involved in some form, either with businesses opening extra hours , at the box office, stewarding or cleaning up."

It will be the 12th annual Marsden Jazz Festival and organisers promise it will be the biggest, brightest and best ever. This year's festival is being aided by a £4,500 grant from the National Lottery's Awards for All scheme.

Performances will showcase every aspect of traditional and contemporary jazz and blues music.

Stacey Kent's visit to Marsden Mechanics' Hall on Saturday night coincides with the release of her new CD The Boy Next Door.

It will be one of her first concerts following its UK release.

Sweet chorus, Friday night's opener at the Mechanics' is John Etheridge's personal tribute to jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli.

During the 1970s Etheridge was a member of the acclaimed Stephane Grappelli Quartet.

Other village organisations will be getting in on the act during the festival weekend.

The National Trust will host a duck race on the River Colne on Sunday, with the first prize of £200 and second prize a helicopter ride.
