A jealous man has been jailed after he attacked a woman in her own home after accusing her of infidelity.

Leeds Crown Court heard Nicholas Paul Brearley had known Sharon Wilcox for around two years and been in “an on/off relationship” with her for about six months before the violence last November.

Conor Quinn prosecuting told the court on November 28 she told him in a text that she was going out that night. He responded by telling her not to, saying there would be guys around her.

“She did go out with two girlfriends drinking in Dewsbury and returning home around 12.30am,” he said.

Mr Quinn told the court Sharon Wilcox went straight into the house to the toilet and did not lock the door behind her. When she came out she found that Brearley had let himself in.

He was drunk and said he was passing in a taxi and “couldn’t resist trying to catch her out.” He began looking around to see if anyone else was present but was not satisfied when he did not find anyone.

“He grabbed her, punched her in the face causing her to fall to the floor and then he continued to punch her to the head.”

She curled herself into a ball trying to protect herself but that did not work instead he stamped on her legs “over and over again, calling her a slut,” said Mr Quinn.

When he eventually stopped he apologised to her but said: “You make me do this, you make me think you are with someone else.”

Things calmed down and they went upstairs together but then further words were said and he pushed her. She lost her balance and fell down the stairs.

She went to bed but was woken by pain in her leg and face and slept downstairs on the sofa. The next morning when he saw her bruised face and that she was limping he accused her of faking her injury. She went to hospital and he told her to say she had accidentally fallen downstairs which she did at that time.

She was found to have a broken foot and ankle, a dislocated finger and bruising to her face and neck. He subsequently sent her numerous text messages apologising in some and accusing her of infidelity in others.

Ricky Holland for Brearley said he accepted they were unpleasant injuries at a time when he had been drinking.

The violence was not planned “plainly he had problem keeping hold of his temper” in drink and paranoia about the relationship.

Brearley, 55 of Speakers Court, Westtown, Dewsbury admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm and was jailed for two years.
