The announcement was made at 1am today by Detective Superintendent Nick Wallen of the Protective Services (Crime) department of West Yorkshire Police, which is leading the investigation.
Ms Cox was attending her regular constituents' surgery in the library in Market Street, Birstall, on Thursday just before 1pm when she was attacked, shot and stabbed.
A passerby, Bernard Kenny, 77, was also stabbed during the attack. He is stable in hospital.
Ms Cox was taken to Leeds General Infirmary but died of her injuries.
Anti terrorism officers have joined the investigation, West Yorkshire Police announced yesterday.
Officers from the North East Counter Terrorism unit are working with the force to probe the death of the MP in Birstall.
And a charity fund set up by Ms Cox's husband Brendan has raised more than £260,000 as of 10am this morning, reaching its £250,000 target in less than 24 hours.
The charities are:
- The Royal Voluntary Service , to support volunteers helping combat loneliness in Mrs Cox's constituency
- HOPE not hate , who seek to challenge and defeat the politics of hate and extremism within local communities across Britain
- The White Helmets who are volunteer search and rescue workers in Syria
