SUPERMARKET Aldi is taking over a recently closed Elland supermarket.

And with plans for two stores – one in Elland and another in Brighouse – they’re creating around 50 new jobs.

The German chain has applied to Calderdale Council to extend the Huddersfield Road store which was formerly the Nisa Extra.

Aldi say they will create 25 jobs, plus additional jobs for the building project and ongoing maintenance and window cleaning.

Last month 17 jobs were lost as Nisa Extra supermarket closed its doors, citing competition with the soon-to-open Morrisons as too strong to continue trading.

Aldi purchased the property and the Harris Partnership Ltd (Architects) has submitted a planning application to the council on behalf of Aldi to convert, refurbish and extend the store.

An Aldi spokesperson said: “Aldi has recently completed the purchase of the former Nisa store on Huddersfield Road in Elland. A planning application has been submitted and we aim to refurbish and re-open the store later this year.

“A planning application has also been submitted in Brighouse, which we hope will be determined later this month. Subject to this approval, the development in Brighouse will commence as soon as possible.”

As part of the planning report, the applicant says: “As a foodstore with predominately own labelled brands, Aldi would not compete directly with existing businesses within Elland. For instance, it does not have an in store baker, butcher, fishmonger or cafe and does not sell newspapers, magazines, cigarettes or lottery tickets. This allows local businesses to flourish as customers link trips with the Aldi store and other local shops.”

They say the proposed design for the Elland store includes the “very latest design features, resulting in a high quality and modern facility for the area”.

If approved the 299sq m extension to the south elevation will create additional warehouse floorspace. To accommodate the extension there will be the loss of 30 car parking spaces, from 121 to 91.

It will be a rival to the new Morrisons store at Briggate in Elland which is creating 250 full and part time jobs and is expected to open in the coming months.

In Brighouse Aldi want to build a new £3.5m store at the junction of Huddersfield Road and Birds Royd Lane.
