A CASH-AND-CARRY company is closing its Huddersfield depot – jeopardising the jobs of 22 employees.

Northants-based Booker has decided not to renew its lease on the 34,000sq ft warehouse at Red Doles Lane, off Leeds Road.

Huddersfield property agent Bramleys has been instructed to re-let the property.

A statement by Booker said the Huddersfield branch would close on Friday, June 26.

A spokeswoman said: “Booker’s current lease for the branch will expire shortly and after an extensive review we have decided not to renew the lease.

“Twenty-two full and part-time colleagues could be affected, however some will be re-located to other branches within the area.”

She said: “During the consultation period, Booker will assist all colleagues to find alternative work, either within the company or with other local employers. In addition, outplacement support and advice will be made available.”

Huddersfield property agent Bramleys has been instructed to re-let the Red Doles Lane depot, which was built in 1995 and comprises checkouts, a trade reception, secure storage and loading bays as well as car parking.

Booker, one of the UK’s largest food wholesaler operators, has more than 170 stores, including ones in Leeds, Bradford, Hull and York. It has more than 8,300 employees.

The company offers more than 20,000 branded and private-label goods to more than 400,000 customers, including independent convenience stores, grocers, pubs and restaurants.

Booker is the latest in a string of big name businesses to pull out of Huddersfield – following the loss of retailers including Woolworths, Zavvi and Adams.
