TALENTED young show jumper Joe Clayton from Huddersfield won the Area Trial at the Anglesey Show in Wales.

Joe, 20, who is based with Michael Whitaker at Whatton, Nottingham, is on the British Equestrian Federation’s (BEF) World Class Development Programme which works with talented riders to maximise their potential and deliver success.

Riding his and his family’s own Saveur, an 11-year-old gelding, Joe was the only rider in the 25-strong class to jump a double clear, beating off competition from leading riders like Michael Whitaker and Geoff Billington.

Joe said: “Saveur has been consistent all season so it’s great to get such a big win under our belt – and in such good company.

“We are now looking ahead to the Young Rider classes at the Horse of the Year Show.”

The World Class Programme incorporates the three Olympic sports of dressage, eventing, showjumping and the Paralympic sport of para-equestrian dressage.

It comprises the performance and development programmes plus the Equine Pathway.Š

The aim of the programme is to have in place a sustainable system that can deliver more medals on the international stage now and in the future.

The programme has been funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, through Exchequer and National Lottery funds, via UK Sport since 1998.
