THE Huddersfield Sikh community is inviting people in Kirklees to join them on a special march tomorrow.

The march, called a Nagar Kirtan, is being held to commemorate a major date in the Sikh calendar.

The event, organised by members of the Fartown Sikh Temple in Willow Lane East, has been held in Huddersfield annually for the past 22 years.

This year it has a special significance as it is the 400th anniversary of the martyrdom of the fifth Guru of the Sikhs, Arjan Dev Ji.

During his guruship thousands of people began to follow the teachings of Sikhism.

His martyrdom has been celebrated every year by the Sikh community since 1606.

Organisers hope that more than 2,000 people will attend tomorrow's festivities.

The event will be attended by representatives from temples across the country, as this is the only march that takes place in the UK.

Representatives from the British Army will also be there, to signify the fact that Sikhs fought alongside them in the Second World War.

The event is open to all members of the public.

The march starts at noon at the Fartown temple.

The march will then go via the Hindu Community Centre on Zetland Street and the Town Hall, ending at the Prospect Street Sikh Temple in Springwood.
