WOULD-BE firefighters are wanted by Skelmanthorpe fire station.

Fit, intelligent men and women are needed for the exciting role.

Station manager Richard Meakin said: "I would urge anyone with an interest to get in touch. We can help them find out what it's all about and advise them on the application process.

"We particularly need people who live within five minutes of the station and can offer on-call cover during the day.

"Maybe people who work from home or in local businesses where their employer will allow them to be on call for the fire station from work would like to apply."

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service wants people from all walks of life to consider the role.

It is looking for mothers at home during the day, local business people working and living nearby, and self employed people or part-time employees who can provide fire cover when they are not at work.

People would need to attend weekly training sessions of between three and five hours in the first twelve months.

Qualified, competent retained firefighters will get an annual retainer of £2,585 and are paid £11.80 an hour for turning out when on call.

The station needs two or more people who can meet basic fitness levels, are aged 18 years or more and can pass assessments required to become a firefighter.

Anyone interested is invited to call at the station for an informal chat with firefighters and the station manager.
