POLICE and Kirklees neighbourhood wardens joined forces to warn people about doorstep tricksters.

An event in Almondbury showed people how to thwart distraction burglars, who call at people's homes and try to con their way in.

Neighbourhood warden supervisor Dave Sanderson said: "We plan to hold similar events elsewhere in Almondbury and also in other areas of Huddersfield."

The town's crime reduction officer, Pc Mick Longden, showed two videos which gave people tips on how to stop thieves talking their way into their homes.

He followed this up with crime prevention advice and tips.

The intruders often pretend to work for Yorkshire Water or other public utility companies.

The wardens showed bolt bars for doors and other security devices to keep unwanted callers out, along with personal attack alarms and secret pockets where people can hide their valuables while out and about.

Mr Sanderson said: "If it stops one person from falling victim to this kind of crime then the event has been well worth it.

"Distraction burglars often work in pairs. One talks his way in, and while he distracts the victim another sneaks in through the unlocked or open door and searches drawers and cupboards for valuables to steal."

The event at All Hallows Church Hall was organised by Almondbury neighbourhood wardens Simon Morris and Chris Maks.
