TOURISM officers in Holmfirth were celebrating today after being named best in the region.

And there were also smiles at the National Coal Mining Museum at Grange Moor – named best large visitor attraction of the year.

The awards came at last night’s ceremony for the Yorkshire Tourist Board White Rose Awards.

The Holmfirth Tourist Information Centre was named best in the county, beating off the challenge from the likes of Knaresborough and Malton.

The Mining Museum, which was also nominated in the best tourism experience category, saw off a challenge from York’s Castle Museum, Harewood House, the Magna Science Centre and the National Media Museum.

Marsden’s Standedge Visitor Centre was one of the runners-up in the small visitor attraction category.

And there was an award too for Cannon Hall Farm at Cawthorne, which scooped the title of best tourism experience.

More than 650 people attended the glittering awards dinner at the Magna Centre.
