A TOP councillor has slammed Olympic organisers for ignoring her town.

But despite Clr Kath Pinnocks concerns yesterday, councillors were planning on making the torch relay a cause for celebration.

Clr Pinnock claimed Huddersfield was getting favourable treatment as details of the route of the Olympic torch relay emerged.

The flame will pass through Huddersfield, Brighouse, Batley and Dewsbury during its 70-day journey round the UK in the run-up to next summers London Games.

But Clr Pinnock is unhappy that the Spen Valley was not included in the route.

And the Cleckheaton Lib Dem claimed on Twitter yesterday that the flame would pass through Huddersfield twice even though the torch is due to visit the town only once.

Clr Pinnock tweeted: Very disappointing that the Olympic Torch isnt coming through the Spen Valley yet Huddersfield has it 2 times. Unfair.

The torch will be taken through Huddersfield on June 24, 2012.

It will start the day in Greater Manchester before being driven from Oldham to Marsh.

The flame will then be carried through the town centre and on to Brighouse.

Clr Pinnock told the Examiner last night: Huddersfield is down as having two stops Marsh and Huddersfield.

Its a poor do that the Spen Valley, which has 50,000 people, doesnt get a visit. I think people in Cleckheaton will be disappointed that theres nowhere in the valley where they can see the torch.

I also think its a shame that Holmfirth has been omitted.

After leaving Brighouse, the torch will pass through Halifax and Bradford before arriving in Leeds.

The following day the flame will travel through Batley, Dewsbury and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park at West Bretton on the way to Sheffield.

Kirklees Councils Cabinet member for health, wellbeing and communities Clr Jean Calvert welcomed the news that the torch will visit the district twice next year.

Its going to be absolutely fantastic, she said. Not many local authorities will get two visits.

The exact route of the torch has not been announced, but Kirklees officials expect the flame will be carried past Greenhead Park on its way from Marsh to the town centre.

Clr Calvert said: It would be a shame not to use the park after its s5m revamp.

Im sure the people of Huddersfield will be out in throngs to support the event. Its a chance for us to showcase all the good things about Kirklees.

Yorkshire Sculpture Park executive director Peter Murray is pleased that the venue will host the torch next year.

He said: We are honoured to play a part in welcoming the Olympic flame to Yorkshire.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for us to showcase the park as a location for sculpture and landscape.

And Dewsbury MP Simon Reevell yesterday spoke of his pleasure that the flame will visit the town.

The arrival of the Olympic torch will give our local community a unique opportunity to show the world the positive side of Dewsbury, he said.

The torch will begin its 8,000-mile journey at Lands End on May 19, 2012, and will arrive in the Olympic Stadium in London on July 27.
