PLANS for a jubilee garden in Slaithwaite will be in full bloom as fundraisers gear up to take part in this year’s Examiner Charity Challenge.

The event – now in its 23rd year – is set to raise tens of thousands of pounds for local charities.

And users of Slaithwaite Community Centre are just some of those taking part to cement their plans for a jubilee garden – which have been in the pipeline for nearly three years.

The Examiner Challenge on Sunday, May 20, has something for everyone ranging from a pushchair and wheelchair walk in Beaumont Park to a series of walks from the Lepton site.

They include three-mile, seven-mile and 12-mile routes.

Vice chairman of the Slaithwaite Association Sharon Hockin said: “The Queen’s Jubilee year inspired the association to name the recreational space the ‘Jubilee Gardens’ as we want to leave the children and inhabitants of Slaithwaite a legacy – for future generations to enjoy.

“We are overwhelmed by the number of children willing to take part and fundraise for the gardens and thanks to local decorators Bradfield’s each child that enters the challenge will proudly wear a T-shirt with our Jubilee Gardens logo on it.”

It is hoped funds raised by the association will be added to grants and other fundraising projects to reach the £70-£80,000 target.

The cash will then be used to transform outside recreational space to include a climbing wall, planters in which to grow fruit and vegetables and a games area.

And it is not too late for people to sign up with registration even available on the day.

Participants can choose which cause to raise money for with the Lions and the Examiner sorting out all the administration.

This year the aim is to help smaller charities and good causes which is why we are eager for groups like junior sports clubs, cubs, guides, brownies, scouts, community groups and schools to sign up.

The event is organised by Lions clubs across Huddersfield and the Examiner.

Entry forms can be obtained from the newspaper office in John William Street, Huddersfield.

Entry forms are also available to download here.

Late entrants can register on the day.

The wheelchair and pushchair challenge takes place in Beaumont Park from 9.30am but a planned concert by Scissett Youth Band has had to be cancelled because many of the players have exams at college.
