SHOPS were today bracing themselves for a last-minute rush for Jubilee flags, bunting and balloons.

With the four-day Bank Holiday weekend looming, shops in Huddersfield reported a run on bunting.

Some shops were already running low on stock as patriotic families got ready to party.

Annabelle Favell-Potter, 46, who runs Don’t Forget in Westbourne Road, Marsh, said she had suddenly got busier as the weekend approached.

“It was very busy yesterday as people realised it was nearly the weekend,” she said.

“We still have stock but it’s getting low.

“People seem to be getting into the Jubilee spirit.”

Annabelle said Union flags had proved very popular and her shop’s red, white and blue window display had drawn attention.

“People have called in to say how nice it is to see the Union flag being celebrated.

“They are saying that the British are conditioned not to be proud of their flags and national emblems so people are pleased to see them on display.”

Annabelle said she personally wasn’t a big Royalist but added: “Historically this is a massive, once-in-a-lifetime event.

“I’m proud to be British and proud of Huddersfield.”

Colin Jowett, who runs Card Circle in the Queensgate Market in Huddersfield, was also seeing good sales.

“I think there might be a last minute rush,” said Colin. “People are having to search around for bunting. There’s definitely a shortage in town.”

Card Corner in Dundas Street, Huddersfield, had sold out of bunting, flags and beakers by the end of the week.
