A TEENAGE couple have been jailed for robbing a pensioner and trying to rob another.

Ben Collins saw himself and girlfriend Tracey Marshall as a modern day Bonnie And Clyde.

But jailing the two 19-year-olds at Leeds Crown Court, Judge Kerry Macgill likened them to ‘hyenas’ and ‘thugs’.

Marshall, of Wilson Avenue, Mirfield, was sent to a young offenders institution for three years and Collins, of no fixed address, was given four-and-a-half years.

Both had admitted robbery and attempted robbery on April 19.

In the robbery they walked into the home of an 86-year-old man, on Odd Fellow Street, Mirfield, at around 5.30pm, where Collins threatened him with a hammer before they stole £18 cash along with his house phone and mobile phone.

Ninety minutes before, they confronted a 74-year-old man on Calder Road, Mirfield, where Collins threatened him with a screwdriver, but the brave victim beat them away with his walking stick.

The judge told Collins and Marshall: “These are despicable, mean offences.’’

She added that the public was “tired of seeing and hearing about young thugs because that is what both of you are.’’

Det Con Paul Hutchinson of Dewsbury CID said: “The suspects only motive was to get money to fund their drink and drug needs. They will now spend a long time in prison reflecting on what they have done.”
