PLANS to improve a major junction in Hipperholme have been formally abandoned.

Calderdale Council's cabinet decided to abandon plans to improve the crossroads where Halifax Road, Denholme Gate Road, Brighouse Road, Wakefield Road and Leeds Road meet.

There were plans to spend £4m on re-designing the roads and installing traffic lights to ease congestion at the major junction.

However, the cabinet decided against the plans after it was discovered that the cost of the project could almost double.

The council would have had to buy land and demolish properties under a compulsory purchase order - and these costs were expected to rise to £6m.
