A FRAUD trial jury has been shown parts of a wedding party video shot during a lavish celebration on Mallorca.
Brighouse man John Hirst married his second wife Linda in Las Vegas in 2006, but then paid for an expensive celebration event back on the Spanish island.
Yesterday the jury at Bradford Crown Court heard that wedding planner Julie Bussell had described the celebration as “the most expensive wedding she had ever organised.’’
The court heard that during the weekend in June 2006 guests enjoyed a golf competition, a ladies’ pampering session and a barbecue as well as the wedding party itself.
John Hirst had also paid for some family members to fly in for the celebration.
In a statement read to the jury Miss Bussell said Linda Hirst knew exactly how she wanted the wedding to be.
“She knew she wanted a Rolls Royce and how she wanted it decorated,’’ said Miss Bussell.
She said in general Linda Hirst made the decisions and her husband had said: “Whatever my girl wants she can have.’’
The jury heard that the bill for the event in Mallorca was in excess of £100,000.
John Hirst, 61, of Millroyd Mill, Huddersfield Road, Brighouse, has accepted his involvement in a so-called ‘Ponzi’ scheme which swindled ex-pats in Mallorca out of millions of pounds and the jury has already been told that in the 1990s he was jailed for a scam involving ex-miners.
Financial advisor Richard Pollett, 70, from Dorset, is on trial accused of involvement in defrauding investors.
Hirst’s 62-year-old wife Linda, from Surrey, his step-daughter Zoe Waite, 36, also from Surrey, and his 35-year-old solicitor son Daniel, of Marsh Lane, Leeds, have all denied money-laundering allegations.
The trial continues.
