ONLY 13% of council workers feel they have job security, a survey has revealed.

Calderdale Council has asked staff for their views.

And only 13% felt confident in the security of their job – down by 26% on a previous survey. Just 9% of workers within the adult health and social care department feel they have job security.

Councillors will meet to discuss the report’s findings at the Use of Resources Scrutiny Panel next Thursday.

A total of 2,142 employees completed the survey – 10% up on the previous survey in 2009. It covered topics such as job satisfaction, leadership, change management, communication and customer service.

Clr Bryan Smith, chairman of the panel, said: “The views and opinions of our staff are crucial to us. Given the difficult time that local government is going through at the moment, the findings in the survey aren’t unexpected. But it’s only by asking our staff what they think that we can hope to improve things.”

Other findings include 29% of staff believing there is effective leadership within the council, down 8% on the 2009 survey.

Morale plummeted 5% to 42% with the difficulties facing the public sector said to be the reason.

The survey also revealed 64% of staff took pride in working for the council.
