TOP councillors fear a special meeting called to resolve Kirklees Council's leadership crisis will be a waste of time.

The meeting - planned for next Wednesday - is intended to sort out the wrangle which has left the authority rudderless for more than a week.

But both Labour and the Greens fear nothing will be resolved.

Two resolutions have been tabled for the meeting.

One proposes a shared administration and Cabinet, with the leader of the council being the leader of the largest political group. That idea was tabled by the Lib-Dems and the Greens.

The second plan is for a Conservative administration and Cabinet. That was put forward by the Conservatives.

But Clr Andrew Cooper, of the Greens, said: "The special council meeting looks sadly predictable.

"The proposals will be opposed by the various groups. The question is: What is the point of the council meeting if we already know the outcome?

"How, before next Wednesday, can we move things forward?"

Clr Mehboob Khan, leader of the Labour group, was also pessimistic.

"The reason why I have not, at this stage, put Labour forward as an alternative council administration is simply because the other groups are not likely to support us.

"It seems silly, because the outcome of the meeting is easily predicted.

"The special meeting is not likely to produce any results. All groups have stated the positions to be taken and this is a waste of council tax payers' cash."

Clr Kath Pinnock, leader of the council, and the ruling Cabinet quit on October 20 in a row over comments about the merger of police services in Huddersfield and Dewsbury.

The composition of the council is Lib-Dem 24, Conservatives 22, Labour 18, Greens 3, BNP 1, Independent 1.
