It will come as no surprise to Huddersfield and Calderdale motorists.

Stretches of the M62 have been named in a list of the most congested roads in the country.

And it’s getting worse.

Two lengths of the busy transPennine motorway figure in the Top 20 of the most congested roads, where journeys are prone to delays.

The busiest stretch on the M62 is the eastbound length between Chain Bar (Junction 26) and Birstall (Junction 27), where only 59.6% of journeys are completed on time.

Slightly better is the stretch on the westbound carriageway between Tingley (Junction 28) and Birstall (Junction 27). That has just 60.2% of journeys completed on time.

But that stretch is where the Highways Agency have recently completed the managed motorway scheme.

That regulates speed for drivers and was introduced last autumn after many months of construction work.

It features variable speed limits and hard shoulder running during busy times, to ease congestion.

The hold-ups have got considerably worse over the past 12 months. The latest figures relate to the year ending December 2013, and the comparative figures for the 2012 study were 69.4% and 76% of journeys completed on time.

On other stretches of the M62 things are slightly better but drivers do face hold-ups.

The stretches running to and from Ainley Top and Outlane show 81.5% of journeys completed on time on the westbound and 89.4% on the eastbound.

There are also delays on the moorland stretch around Scammonden, where the figures for the eastbound and westbound carriageways worsened over the past 12 months.

The unluckiest drivers in the country are those who have to tackle the M25 between Junctions 1B and 1A, where just 51.6% of journeys take the expected time.
