A grieving mum, whose son was killed in an 80mph crash in Huddersfield, will hand her petition for justice to No.10 Downing Street on March 26.

Daniel Atkinson and Jade Rice, both 17, died when the car they were in hit a lamppost on Bradley Road, in 2006.

Nobody has been prosecuted over their deaths and now Daniel’s mum Linda Hawker will lodge a petition with Prime Minister David Cameron in a last ditch attempt to bring the driver to justice.

In 2008 an inquest heard that the car, driven by live-in carer Mohammed Tanwir was travelling at 80mph in a 40mph zone when he lost control of the vehicle.

Ms Hawker and her daughters Leander, 21, and Paige, 12, will be taking the petition to No.10 with Wakefield MP Mary Creagh and barrister Naeem Siraj, who is representing the families free of charge.

The families will then have to wait up to a week to see if No.10 will act on their petition which has gathered thousands of signatures.

Ms Hawker, of Wakefield, said: “I’ve not stopped thinking about it. I’m excited and a bit scared.

“I’m feeling quite hopeful about it even though I’ve been let down so many times before.

“This time I’m feeling a bit more hopeful.”

Tanwir was cleared of failing to stop during a trial at Huddersfield Magistrates’ Court after a judge ruled there was insufficient evidence to charge him with causing death by dangerous driving.

A request for further legal action was turned down by the then Director of Public Prosecutions Keir Starmer QC in 2010.
