THIS highly visible van is being used at speed camera sites.

But motorists can breathe a collective sigh of relief as it is not an enforcement vehicle.

Instead the Vauxhall Vivaro is used by technicians working for the West Yorkshire Casualty Reduction Partnership to maintain the county’s 250 roadside speed control safety cameras.

The partnership is publishing pictures of the new van – including a driver’s eye view – so that drivers don’t mistake it for one of its Ford Galaxy camera patrol vehicles.

Partnership spokesman Philip Gwynne said: “We expect some people will see the van at the side of the road and mistake it for an enforcement vehicle, but the differences are fairly obvious.

“There’s no uniformed officer in high visibility gear sitting in the back with the doors wide open and a big “speed camera” warning sign out the back, pointing a camera at oncoming vehicles.”

The technicians’ vehicle is used when cameras are loaded, unloaded and tested to confirm the equipment’s accuracy.

The van is a West Yorkshire police vehicle – as are all the partnership’s technical support vehicles and mobile patrol Ford Galaxies – and is clearly marked.

It is only used on road safety duties and is marked Casualty Reduction Partnership.
