A Huddersfield rugby legend is to appear at the Rio Olympics.

Former Leeds Rhinos star Keith Senior is to cycle 3,000 miles to the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro for the opening ceremony, along with former Salford and Wales prop Paul Highton as a homage to the 4,000 mile effort undertaken by Jane Tomlinson

They will both be raising money for the Rugby League Cares charity and will join Jane’s husband, Mike, who is raising money for the Jane Tomlinson Appeal.

They will set off on their epic adventure on June 27 from London’s Olympic Stadium to Le Havre, and will then journey 1,231 miles to Lisbon.

The team will then fly to Recife in Brazil where they will cycle 1,600 miles along the Brazil coast to reach the finish line.

It is the latest sporting challenge for Keith, who also tackled four marathons in a month for the Laura Crane Youth Cancer Trust.

The Rugby League Cares charity provides grants to children’s grass roots clubs and cares for players’ welfare.

Jane from Leeds died in 2007. She raised almost £2m for charity while doing a series of athletic challenges despite being diagnosed with terminal cancer.
