KELLY Reddington, a cadet sergeant with 59 Squadron Air Training Corps in Huddersfield, has had a busy first few months since being appointed as the Lord Lieutenant's Air Cadet for West Yorkshire.

A month after her appointment in October, she was awarded the title of Young Person of the Year title by the North Region RAF Association.

In gaining the award, she followed in the footsteps of another member of 59 Squadron, Cadet Warrant Officer Greg Coles.

At the start of December Kelly was one of two cadets from the UK who took part in a tri-service visit to Singapore.

"I've attended several events with the Lord Lieutenant since last October, including the Remembrance Day service in Leeds," said Kelly.

"It's quite nerve-wracking at times, because I know I'm representing the squadron.

"But it's also very enjoyable. Being selected to go to Singapore was a great way to end the year, and I'm looking forward to this year's events, too."

Kelly, 17, a student at Wakefield Girls' High School, is studying for A-levels in biology, chemistry, maths and general studies.

She hopes to study medicine before going on to a career in the forces.

Anyone between the ages of 13 and 16 can become an air cadet. To find out more about 59 Squadron, visit its website at www.59atc.org.uk or call 01484 535779 on Mondays or Fridays between 7pm and 9pm to arrange a visit.
