RUGBY union fans gearing up for tonight’s World Cup Final will be taking their seats in pubs throughout the Huddersfield area to cheer England on in the World Cup Final.

Pubs and clubs throughout the district are expecting thousands of fans to descend on them to watch the action live on the big screens.

Hopes will be high for an England victory, despite the team having lost 36-0 to finalists South Africa earlier in the tournament held in France.

Jill Hogg, manager of the Warehouse pub, said: “We are expecting a packed pub.

“Last weekend, when we played France, it was crammed.

“It was a brilliant atmosphere and we even had a few French people in so there was a bit of friendly banter between everyone.

“I think it will be the same this weekend. All the rugby fans will be in good spirits and hopefully the atmosphere will be great again.”

Jill joked: “I am looking forward to it but at the same time I’m not – but that’s only because I’ll be working!”

The Zetland Street pub will be showing the match live on its eight screens, including one large screen.

Nationally, supermarket Sainsbury’s are expecting to sell up to 12.5m bottles and cans of beer or lager for what could be the nation’s biggest celebration since England last won the Rugby World Cup in 2003.

They also expect sales of pizza, curry and bread to increase as fans feast as they watch the game in their own homes.

This afternoon is expected to be the busiest time for people stocking up on food and drink, with kick-off at 8pm.
