CHILDREN at a first school are campaigning to get people to do what you would expect them to do automatically – and clean up after their dogs.

The youngsters at Cumberworth First School are so fed up with the mess being left near their school by dogs with unthinking owners that they have started a poster campaign to get the message over.

While it is good that children understand the problems, it seems sad they and their school are having to teach people a lesson about hygiene.

Children play in a nearby park and there have been problems with fouling on the grass and footpaths. Small children are unlikely to be aware of what they are treading in and unwittingly take dog mess into school and home on their shoes.

All it takes is a little more thought from the minority of dog owners who continue to cause this problem. Most dog owners are responsible and clear up after their pets.

But if children understand the dangers well enough to design posters to pass on that message, then dog owners should be able to listen to the message and act responsibly.
