A MAN has been jailed for at least 30 years for raping and murdering pregnant teenager Amy Williams.
Philip Raymond Powell, 43, pleaded guilty at Stafford Crown Court to attacking the 14-year-old, who was six months pregnant, after she left a family party in Telford, Shropshire, last Boxing Day evening.
Amy's near-naked body was found the next morning in the grounds of a church in the Madeley area of the town. She had been strangled.
Mr Justice Wakerley told Powell: "Boxing Day last should have been a happy day. You brought misery and you brought grief.
"You terrified a young girl who you happened to see going home that evening.
"Your mind was on one thing and that was sex.
"You took her to Madeley churchyard and on that cold December night you terrified her into taking her clothes off.
"The sexual indignities which followed amounted to rape. Then, fearing that she would identify you, you killed her."
The judge said Powell had shown no mercy and expressed astonishment that the killer had no history of sexual deviancy.
In imposing a minimum period of 30 years before Powell can be considered for parole, the judge stressed that he could not predict if the time would ever come when it would be safe to free him.
