Kingsgate bosses are keen to make progress on plans to extend the Huddersfield town centre shopping complex.

They say talks over the proposed scheme are continuing with the prime movers behind them saying they are keen to get it up and running as quickly as possible.

A separate scheme is planned for The Packhorse Centre and if both go ahead it would radically change that part of the town centre by encouraging people to stay there after work until well into the evening.

Owner WD Huddersfield unveiled proposals for Kingsgate Leisure – a development of six restaurants and a multiplex cinema – back in October last year.

At the time the company said the £15m scheme could create up to 150 jobs and would help boost Huddersfield’s evening economy by encouraging people to linger in the town centre after work to enjoy a meal and take in a film.

The proposed 56,000sq ft development would include a 20,000sq ft first floor multiplex cinema providing at least two screens along with six themed casual dining restaurants.

The scheme, which it was planned to open in late 2016, would link to the existing Kingsgate shopping mall.

But it would also involve creating a new entrance in Cross Church Street – meaning the loss of several existing shop units.

Kingsgate centre manager Jonathan Hardy said WD Huddersfield was in a period of negotiation with neighbouring property owners who would be affected by the scheme, adding: “We are still very keen to do it. It is very much on the front boiler.”

Mr Hardy said progress had slowed over the summer months due to the holidays, but said the company was confident of resolving matters “quite soon.”

The news comes days after the owners of The Packhorse Centre in Huddersfield unveiled plans for major expansion, including a food court.

Several well-known chains including Burger King and El Taco Loco are reported to be in talks about moving into a new first-floor development at the centre.

There is also work underway to the entrances to the Packhorse Centre from both Kirkgate and King Street, with plans for more units to be created in King Street.
