YOUNGSTERS from Kirkburton First School celebrated their annual French Day with a twist.

Every year the school celebrates all things Gallic.

This year’s theme was the Tour de France, which comes to Kirklees and Calderdale in July next year.

The Tour de Kirkburton, however, didn’t involve bikes. Instead the children were asked to bring their scooters.

More than 140 scooters were parked up at the school and throughout the day children took part in four stages.

PE co-ordinator Jennie Hughes brought Young Leaders from Kirkburton Middle School to help organise the sections, which included a ‘mountain’ stage, an obstacle course, a question-and-answer session and a speed trial.

Children wore the blue, red and white of the French flag.

French teacher Sue McBurney, said: “The children really loved it. We usually have a different theme every year but we’ll probably do the Tour de France again next year.”
