Staff at a Kirkheaton primary school are not letting the dust settle under their feet following a disappointing Ofsted report.

Kirkheaton Primary School, New Road, has been downgraded from Good to Requires Improvement following the latest visit from Ofsted.

One of the main points highlighted by the inspectors was that pupils’ progress in writing and maths was not as consistently good as it should be.

They also commented on variable teaching and lack of expertise in maths, and said that good progress in writing was hampered by too few opportunities to use it.

They said that school leaders and governors could be more rigorous in their monitoring.

On the other hand, Ofsted said that some teaching at the 447-pupil school was good or outstanding and pupils’ progress in reading was good.

The report added: “Leaders and governors understand the school’s strengths and weaknesses. They have made good plans to eliminate shortcomings which are improving the school.”

Acting headteacher Barbara Robson said: “The inspectors made many positive comments about the school, including high standards of reading, the behaviour of pupils, the good and outstanding teaching in some lessons and that the leaders and governors have a good understanding of the school’s strengths and weaknesses.

“The school is now working on areas where the inspectors have asked for improvements to be made and these include improving the consistency in the quality of teaching across school, increasing progress in mathematics to ensure achievement is consistently good, ensuring that the presentation of work is improved and that the governors to continue to challenge senior leadership.

“We are confident that by working together at the school, all the points raised in the report can be addressed effectively.”
