KIRKHEATON residents are being asked to help plan activities for youngsters.

A task force hopes to head off problems with groups of teenagers at a loose end who gather in the village and are a potential source of trouble.

Residents are being urged to get more involved with the task force, which includes the area's three Kirklees councillors - Angela Ellam, Roger Battye, and Peter McBride.

The group has been set up by local police in Dalton.

They want more people to work with the group, which also includes parish councillors, church and business representatives, residents and the council's youth service.

The next meeting of the group will be tomorrow at 7pm at Kirkheaton Church Parish Centre.

Clr Ellam said:

"While an increased police presence recently has reduced the problem of large numbers of youngsters congregating in the village, the tasking group is looking for a longer-term solution to provide a diversity of activities for these young people.

"We would like to get more residents and businesses involved, and the parents and young people themselves.

"At the moment few residents and business people attend. They have an essential part to play identifying positive actions we can take to benefit the community as a whole."
