ROAD clutter needs to be looked at more thoroughly, Kirklees Cabinet members agreed.

But they ruled out a ‘naked’ roads scheme which would see all street signs and road markings removed.

Cabinet members backed a series of ways to deal with temporary signs and issue penalties for contractors who don’t remove them quick enough.

Council officials have advised a new scheme of reporting problem signs and markings is set up and publicised so that residents know they can easily report problems.

Council staff will also be asked to report signs which need repairing or removing and landowners will be charged for the removal of overgrown vegetation that obstructs road signs or markings.

Chris Marsden, chairman of Huddersfield Civic Society, asked if they could be involved in the future scrutiny process.

Cabinet members agreed on Tuesday that there was more that could be done to look at wider issues of street clutter with scrutiny to look at over the next 12 months.
