When it comes to brewing beer Huddersfield is at the top of the barrel with nearly twice as many as the national average.

According to data from Companies House – the UK’s official registrar of companies – there are 20 companies registered  in Kirklees and Calderdale that manufacture beer as one of their main activities.

This means that there are 3.2 beer manufacturers in the area for every 100,000 people who live here – 79% greater than the UK average which stands at 1.8 manufacturers per 100,000 people.

These figures were taken from data released by Companies House which aims to provide a snapshot of the UK’s businesses.

November is only the second month in which these figures have been made publicly available and as such they provide an insight into the UK’s business dealings that was previously hidden.

Across the UK as a whole there were around 1,100 companies that listed beer production as one of their primary activities.

The City of London – due to the extreme difference in the number of people who work and live there – had the highest number of manufacturers but due to the fact that its residential population is so small and the fact that big companies generally choose to register in central London this figure is something of an anomaly.

Malvern Hills in Worcestershire had the second highest number of beer makers with 9.3 per 100,000 residents.

And 56 of around 400 local authority areas in the UK were found not to have any beer manufacturing companies registered to them.

The 20 beer makers registered in and around Huddersfield are: 2 Bobs Brewing Company, Calderdale; Little Valley Brewery, Calderdale; Bronte Ales Limited, Calderdale; Hebden Bridge Brewing Company, Calderdale; Barearts ltd, Calderdale; Halifax Steam Brewing Company, Calderdale; Barge & Barrel Brewing Company; Calderdale; Sportsman Brewing Company, Kirklees; HDM Brewing Company, Kirklees; Milltown Brewing Company, Kirklees; Langsett Road Enterprises, Kirklees; Squawk Brewing Company, Kirklees; Golcar Brewery, Kirklees; Magic Rock Brewing Company, Kirklees; Empire Brewing, Kirklees; Thirstin Brewhouse, Kirklees; Pennine Brewery Company, Kirklees; Summer Wine Brewery, Kirklees; Outgang Brewery, Kirklees; Small World Beers, Kirklees
