FAMILIES are being encouraged to get active in a bid to tackle childhood obesity.

A number of events are being organised from today as part of Kirklees Move It Week – to coincide with national obesity week from July 4 to 10.

The aim is to spread the message to families that being fit and healthy can be fun.

It is also designed to persuade overweight families to eat healthier and take more exercise.

The Huddersfield Giants will be getting physical with children at the Fusion weight management group today.

Around a dozen youngsters aged eight to 14 enjoy weekly sessions at Huddersfield Sports Centre to learn more about nutrition and exercise, and ultimately lose weight.

They are usually referred to the scheme by health professionals.

There are also other projects running across Kirklees to support families in their battle against the bulge – including the free 10-week MEND programme.

Two half-day physical activity workshops are also being held in junior schools including Westmoor at Dewsbury and Dalton in Huddersfield to raise awareness of exercise.
