THE man at the centre of a funding row which has put a major Huddersfield development in doubt has resigned.

Learning and Skills Council (LCS) chief executive Mark Haysom stood down yesterday.

Last week the LSC announced that 79 further education college building plans had been put on hold because of lack of funds.

This includes the £70m plan to build a new Kirklees College campus on land between Chapel Hill, Manchester Road and the River Colne.

The proposed campus is to be the centrepiece of the £175m Waterfront Quarter scheme, which includes flats and offices.

Building was expected to start early this year.

It was anticipated the buildings would be fully occupied by July, 2011. Kirklees College said last week it was hopeful the project would still go ahead.

Government ministers are expected to meet the LSC next month to decide the fate of the schemes.

Mr Haysom stepped down from his £200,000-a-year post yesterday .

He said: “Thanks to the investments we have made, we have been able to change the face of further education.

“It is with huge regret that I have reached the conclusion that – because of the difficulties with that programme – I announce I am stepping down as chief executive.”
