CONSERVATIVES have called for kerbside glass collections to be retained.

Kirklees Council’s Labour Cabinet has proposed scrapping the monthly service to save money.

But Clr Nigel Patrick, pictured, said yesterday that a private company could take over the collections.

The Holme Valley South Conservative said: “This is an example of a service area where private and third sector organisations have the expertise to create a business opportunity out of a non profit making service.

“It would have been a backward step for the council to stop glass collection, and simply landfill the glass after it had passed through the incinerator.

“The production of new glass from recycled glass saves energy, reduces carbon and reduces the amount of raw materials used in the process.

“This is the way forward, it’s a win for the council, it’s a win for residents and a win for the industry.”

All 69 councillors will meet to decide the council’s budget for 2012/13 at Huddersfield Town Hall from 5pm tomorrow.
