A rugby league club looks set to buy council land.

Cabinet members agreed to the sale of grazing lane at Carr Lane, Dewsbury Moor following a request from Dewsbury Moor Amateur Rugby League Football Club.

The 200-member club, which also has a junior section, wants to develop the 2.1 acre site for training pitches to be used with their existing facilities.

Clr Graham Turner, Cabinet member for Resources, said: “The money will go into the council’s funds and increase the capabilities of the club and access to sport.”

The deal will mean Kirklees ends a grazing tenancy, which generated £300 a year.

Kirklees will now enter negotiations with the rugby club for a price at “open market value”

The land is based in the greenbelt and is unlikely to ever generate income for anything else.
