BOWLERS angry at plans to scrap the indoor sport in Huddersfield have been thrown a lifeline.
They have been promised a meeting by Kirklees Council leader Mehboob Khan to try to come up with a compromise.
The council angered hundreds of bowlers, many of them elderly, when it announced plans to scrap bowling rinks in the proposed new Sports Centre at Springwood.
The council said it needed to save £1m on the project.
Bowlers have launched petitions and lobbied the council in a bid to reverse the decision.
Clr Khan said: “The bowlers brought some interesting ideas to the council meeting, as well as ways to increase income generation to help make a bowls rink more viable.
“And although I can’t make any promises about overturning decisions, I want us to reach the best possible decision, so I have offered to meet them again.
“I am mainly interested in their ideas for how that space can be used to generate income in the summer months when it is not used for bowling, what the views of the Owls sports club are and what commitments were made to the bowlers by previous administrations before I became leader.
“It is not too late in the day to improve the sports centre.”
