LATE-NIGHT revellers in Huddersfield town centre will have a wider choice of cabs.

Councillors yesterday agreed to let Sadia Rehman set up a taxi office above Malaikas takeaway at 11 Cross Church Street.

Two cabs will park at Bubble and Squeak car wash on Leeds Road and drive into the town centre to pick up customers from Cross Church Street.

Ms Rehman told Kirklees Council’s Huddersfield Planning Sub-committee that the office would improve late-night safety in the town centre.

She said: “People are hanging around on Cross Church Street after a night out, which is where the problems start.

“Additional taxis will reduce waiting times considerably.”

Sub-committee member Clr Jean Calvert agreed at yesterday’s meeting at Huddersfield Town Hall.

The Ashbrow Labour woman said: “Getting people out of the area as quickly as possible would alleviate some of the problems.”

The sub-committee voted six to five to allow the taxi office to be set up for a 12-month trial period.

Meanwhile, the sub-committee voted six to four against allowing Hardeep Singh to establish a taxi booking office at Piphill Stores on Primrose Hill Road.

A decision on a plan to set up a taxi office at Wakefield Road in Dalton has been delayed. Councillors voted to defer the application and carry out a site visit.
