OFFICIALS are checking how many homes have only one occupant.
People living alone are entitled to 25% off their council tax.
Kirklees Council has started writing to 64,000 households in the district which currently receive the discount to ask if they are still single-occupancy.
The council’s Cabinet member for resources Clr Shabir Pandor said: “This review helps us to protect the public purse and ensures people pay what is fair.
“These customers should rightly receive this discount. Sometimes people forget to tell us, or deliberately don’t tell us when their circumstances change. It’s very important our records are up to date.
“I urge those who receive a review form to respond as soon as they get it.”
Those who don’t respond to the letter – even if their circumstances haven’t changed – risk a fine of between £70 and £280 for failing to supply information.
