Costs of clearing flytipping in Kirklees are unknown.

And that’s despite the council receiving around 250 reports of dumped rubbish every month.

Clr Cathy Scott, Cabinet member for Streetscene, said: “No-one wants to see the vision of their community obscured by unscrupulous people across Kirklees.

“We need our community to keep their eyes open and report it.

“The council does not record the costs of clearing flytipping.” She said different departments including Streetscene and housing, plus partner agencies, were involved.

Clr Phil Scott, Almondbury Lib Dem, said: “What comes as a disappointment to me is the fact we are giving a blank cheque to the service for clearing it up.”

He asked they work together to find a way to record the costs.

Some of the dumped fridges

Recently 20 fridges were left on Wessenden Moor between Butterley and Blackley reservoirs. The land in Marsden was owned by Yorkshire Water but Kirklees Council agreed to remove them.

In April council workmen spent hours clearing up rubbish dumped at the side of the A640 road at Nont Sarahs. It is believed a lorry carrying the furniture, clothing, papers and household rubbish dumped the load at the roadside.

Kirklees investigates flytipping, but last year only eight people were punished after investigators identified the culprits.
