WORKERS will finish clearing the ice rink from the Piazza today.

And council staff have pledged to clean up the “lunar landscape” that has been left behind.

Bad weather and heavy machinery has left The Piazza looking like a ploughed field.

Huddersfield On Ice closed on January 3 after a record-breaking Christmas.

The area is currently a muddy mess as workers remove the rink from the Piazza.

A Kirklees Council spokeswoman said yesterday: “The site team started to take down the rink on Saturday and will complete the task today.

“An assessment will then be done on how much repair the grassed area will need as unfortunately Monday’s heavy rain has resulted in the area becoming muddy.

“The area will be re-seeded when the weather is slightly warmer.”

Kirklees puts on the ice rink each Christmas.

Between December 2 and January 3 some 14,012 skaters used the rink – up 6% on 2009/10.

The rink cost Kirklees £150,000 and council officers anticipate recouping only a third of the money.

But the council backed the investment to draw families into the town centre over Christmas.

More than 3,000 people have signed up to a Facebook group calling for a permanent ice rink in Huddersfield.
