A COUNCIL building could be sold as Kirklees struggles to cope with the public spending squeeze.

Officials are considering putting Oaklands in Dalton on the market.

The house is used by Kirklees Council’s wellbeing and communities service for training and support.

A council spokesman said yesterday: “A review has found that services could become more efficient if these teams were housed in other buildings, so it’s likely that Oaklands will be vacated later this year.

“The key decision is to consider selling the property. There will be consultation at ward level and we will also look at whether the council would benefit from using Oaklands in a different way.

“It is in our interests, and also those of taxpayers, to examine all options as soon as we anticipate a building becoming empty.

“This means buildings are empty for as short a time as possible, cutting any risk of vandalism and reducing costs.”

The council’s Cabinet is due to rule on the proposal in May or June.
