EVERY household in Kirklees is to have its grey bins collected next week as the council catches up on missed refuse.

Kirklees Council says they will be collected regardless of whether bins are due for collection or not and residents are asked to put their bins out on their usual collection date next week.

Following this, normal collections of green and grey bins will resume in the week beginning Monday, February 4.

A council spokesman said: “We would like to thank everyone for their patience and especially those who have done their bit this week, clearing snow from their paths and making sure that their cars are parked so that gritting and bin wagons can get through.”

People can visit www.kirklees.gov.uk/bins to check their regular bin collection dates following the catch-up service.

The council also gritted secondary routes yesterday and a full grit was scheduled for last night.

Each full grit is over 1,150 kilometres (710 miles) and uses 200 tonnes. There are over 50 gritters and ploughs out on the roads carrying out this operation.

There is still plenty of grit in stock though it has been depleted steadily.

From an original stock of 25,000 tonnes, 8,000 tonnes had been used by Monday.

A council spokesman said: “Any grit bin that is reported as being empty will be refilled as soon as possible. This work has already started.”

People can report an empty grit bin by contacting Kirklees on 01484 414700 or, for those on Twitter, tweet your request and the location of the bin to @kirkleeswinter

Unsurprisingly, football and rugby matches due to be played on council-managed and school pitches in Kirklees this weekend have been cancelled.

The decision has been taken because of the wintry conditions which may soon be replaced by waterlogging when the snow and ice thaws.

Despite that, conditions in the district had returned to normal yesterday with West Yorkshire transport organisation, Metro, reporting no weather-related disruption to buses.

As for schools and colleges, those which had not reopened on Tuesday finally opened their doors yesterday.
